Preparing the model:
Hair condition is put into the hair to keep the alginate (molding material) from getting tangled in it. Vaseline is also put on the eyebrows and eyelashes.

Once the artist and model are satisfied with the hair prep, the model is ready for molding.

The first layer of alginate is applied.

Careful attention is paid to the eyes, ears, mouth, and nose making sure to remove all air bubbles and, most importantly, to keep the airway (the nostrils) free and clear of obstruction at all times.

Special attention to the eyes and ears.

The end of the nose is the last to be covered (yet continuing to keep the nostrils open and clear).

The first layer of alginate is complete.

A second layer of alginate is applied to ensure a strong mold.

Checking the airway and keeping it clear.

Second layer of alginate is complete.

Cotton is pressed into the surface of the alginate so that the plaster mother mold has something to adhere to (plaster will no stick directly to the alginate).

Applying a layer of plaster to the cotton surface.

Cut pieces of cheesecloth are laid on top of the plaster soaked cotton, then also covered with plaster.

Finishing touches of plaster are brushed onto the near complete mold.

Approximately minutes later the plaster has hardened and the mold is prepped for removal.

Removing the mold. The total process takes approximately 30 minutes.
